Benefits of Water Sports and Necessary Precautions

Water sports are very refreshing and exhilarating. But they aren’t popular just because of the adrenaline rush. Other than the outdoorsy vibe and the physical exertion, water sports come with many health benefits. This is true for almost all water sports, from wakeboards to canoes. The adrenaline in itself is beneficial as it raises energy and increases enthusiasm.


Decreased Risk for Chronic Diseases – Water sports involve a great extent of physical effort. Most watersports put almost all the body parts under work. This makes them a great form of exercise. Regular practice can improve dietary habits by boosting metabolism and promoting a healthier lifestyle, reducing the risk of chronic diseases. This also reduces the risk of chronic heart disease and diabetes.

Helps with Arthritis – Arthritis can get worse without some movement on the affected joints. The fluidity of movements in the water is gentle and can be soothing to the joints. This can help the affected joints without worsening the symptoms. There is a branch of treatment that deals with arthritis using water called hydrotherapy.

Bone Density – Water sports include a wide range of activities with a difference in effort and accessibility. It also includes some activities like water cycling and canoeing that require very little exertion. These activities can be participated in by the elderly too. They can significantly improve bone strength and density.

Mental Health – The energising feel of the water and being surrounded by nature are factors that make water sports beneficial against mental illnesses like depression and anxiety. Swimming is a very common water sport that has proven notable positive mood changes in men and women.


Water sports are to be practised often. But it is also recommended to know the necessary precautions before approaching any water sport. Precautions for water sports can be divided into three categories – Boat Sports, Beach Sports, and Inland Waterways.

Boat Sports Safety – A lifejacket is a must. This rule is often overlooked by people who think they’re strong swimmers, but they are to be worn irrespectively. All the equipment must undergo a thorough inspection. This includes the boat and safety equipment too. Let someone know your itinerary so that they can check on the trip.

Checking the weather forecast can help in preparing for the trip. Appropriate training is necessary to steer and manage a boat. Suppose this is an issue, an experienced person should be invited aboard. Ensure that there is a dependable means of communication with the shore. Distress signals can also be stored.

Beach Sports Safety – Patrol the beach before deciding where to enter the water. Keep in the proximity of lifeguards and avoid dangerous rocks. Try to take someone along for the activity. Watch out for red and checkered flags as those mean ‘danger’ and ‘area for boats’, respectively. Inflatable toys are not suitable for the beach as the wind can blow them out to the sea.

Inland Waterways Safety – Waterways can sometimes boost one’s confidence in swimming due to the lack of strong currents. Remember not to overdo it. Using wakeboards as flotation devices can be fun and helpful. Wetsuits or Drysuits can be used. Avoid unfamiliar water bodies. They can be approached after consulting a local or someone who knows about it. Try to bring someone along as it is not safe to do such activities alone. Information on signs and posters near the waterway is important and should be given attention.
