4 Things You Should Know About the Evolution of Vape Technology

Whether you’re a fan of vaping or not, it’s hard to deny that it has become a massive industry. Stats from Mordor Intelligence show that the global vaping market is expected to expand at a CAGR of 8.28 percent between 2020 to 2025.

Today, many people are taking up vaping because it looks cool, discreet, and trendy. Although it’s fast becoming profitable for many companies, the main thing driving the growth for this industry is technology. The innovation brought by advances in the technological field is mainly responsible for driving the evolution of vaping devices.

From the vape devices to battery life and flavors, understanding the different moving parts and how technology affected them can help you appreciate how far vape technology has come. So whether you’re new to the vaping world or a vaping enthusiast, here are four things to know about vape technology and how it evolved over the years.

  1. The Genesis

Vaping began thanks to Hon Lik, the scientist credited with the invention of the first form of vaping device. He achieved this feat in 2003, but the original idea existed way before Hon Lik’s time. The patent filing for “electric vaporizer” was by Joseph Robinson back in 1927. This was the first mention of the terms that gradually developed into present-day vaping.

In Joseph’s idea, the electronic device was capable of producing vapors as medicinal compounds. Today, a typical vape device comprises two main parts that work together to vaporize e-liquid. These parts were the atomizer or coil and the battery.

The e-liquid occupies tanks of different sizes, such as 22mm vape tanks or smaller. The battery supplies energy to the atomizer to heat up and vaporize the e-liquid. This design remained consistent in the three generations of vape devices that followed.

  1. First Generation Vapes

The devices invented by Hon Lik were the first generation in the timeline of vape devices. His devices had a three-piece flavor cartridge, battery, and atomizer. Hon Lik began work on his invention in 2001, and after three years of constant effort, he got all components to work and successfully achieved vapor without actual combustion. The build of the Lik’s early vape device varies in several ways from those vapers use today.

Lik’s original design employed a piezoelectric ultrasound element instead of the heating coil famous in the present-day vape device. Overall, this type of device was bulkier and more complicated than the design most people are now familiar with. Nevertheless, the design paved the way for subsequent technological breakthroughs in the early days vaping arena.

  1. Second & Third Generation Devices

The second generation of vape devices rapidly succeeded their first-generation counterparts. Their design relied heavily on the increasing demands of the general public. Hence, they had extended battery life and added more options to the available flavors.

The main aim was to improve the vaping experience of new users in the vape market. But it didn’t stop there. The rise in popularity and innovations gave birth to what many in the vaping community know as mods. And so, the third generation of vaping devices was born. The “mod” in this case meant modification.

These new devices became the modern version that allows vapers to enjoy more power and personalization from their devices. As you would expect, the vaping technology in mods is much more sophisticated, explaining they are also called Advanced Personal Vaporizer (APV).

  1. Modernization of Vaping Technology

In the year 2019, the vaping industry reached a USD 13 billion valuation. Most of the value derived in this sector came from users who purchase various flavors and explore new vaping experiences. The manufacturers and distributors of vaping products meet the growing market demands by incorporating new technologies into the making and functions of their products.

This led to the production of vaping devices with cutting-edge technologies and new features with every new release. The modern vaping device comes with features that its predecessors envy, including adjustable temperature, digital display, and higher wattage.

The Aim of Vaping Technologies

The innovators behind vaping technology are always looking for ways to enhance product quality to improve the vaping experiences of their customers. In some companies, R&D is underway to find suitable ways to use titanium or nickel wires due to some advantages these metals bring.

Such metals have unique properties such as better electrical conductivity, lower resistance, and higher thermal capabilities. The resulting devices will have highly regulatory sensitivity, extended coil life, better-tasting flavors, and thicker vapors. For the consumer, this will translate to longer, safer, and better vaping sessions.

The recent and rapid development in the technological sector has affected several industries, and the vaping market is no exception. But the evolution of vaping technology is far from over, and you can rest assured that new and improved products will hit the market over time. Most likely, vaporizers will continue to decrease in size while increasing in safety, features, and energy efficiency.

Overall, vapers will find products that are better suited to their preferences and more customizable. However, many are still calling for further research into vaping and its effects. Hence, the observations and results from scientific studies will also have significant impacts on the vaping industry going forward.
